Life without Anorexia

My motto is
'Dont let the sadness of your past & the fear of your future ruin the happiness of your present'

My life at the moment is completely different to how it once was. I spent 5 years sick with anorexia nervosia and depression as well as struggling with self harm and overexercising. I spent 2 years in different treatment centres.
And since 2012 i have been declared healthy from my eating disorder.

I have been blogging for 7 years, and my whole journey is written in my posts. I now represent healthy and happiness. I want to show anyone struggling that it is possible to recover, no matter how hard it may seem.

I now blog about recovery, my life, veganism and positivity!

If you have any questions leave them in the comment section as i am much quicker at answering there, otherwise you can always send an email: lifewithoutanorexia@hotmail.com

My summer plans

Summer 2017. My first summer away from home.

Well, not really.... considering ive spent summer 2010 and 2011 in a hospital. But this summer im not travelling home to Stockholm... ive had so many people ask me this almost as if they expect me to travel home, but no... Gothenburg is my home now. This is where i study, this is where i work, this is where my friends live, this is where i live and where my life is. Of course i wont live here forever but this is where my life is right now and i see no point in packing my things and travelling to Stockholm only to repack my things to travel home again in autumn. The only time i thought about that option was when i couldnt find work, then i thought "well im guaranteed work in Stockholm" or i would atleast not have as many expenses so if i didnt have work i could atleast manage to survive. But now i have work and can manage on my own all summer i.e pay all my bills, pay for food and other necessities!

So my plans for summer... first off work as much as i can.

I would like to travel.... i want to travel to New York again. Travel to Berlin or travel to some warm country where i can just lie on the beach for a week hahah. But those travel plans will have to wait.  Maybe in autumn or next year i'll travel but this year i dont think i will, or who knows maybe it will be a spontaneous trip with my sister somewhere... though i think she has other travel plans already so the chances of that happening are slim.

I want to loan a book from a library and begin reading again. Now that i dont have to study and should have some free time, it would be perfect to sit in the sun and read!! Just need to find a good book and get a library card, hahah.

Also ive been listening to so many different podcasts, alot of documentary podcasts. Instead of staring at a screen ive been listening to podcasts and can listen to 1-4 podcasts a day about different documentaries. Its both saddening, shocking and interesting and a whole range of thoughts and emotions about the stories.

I want to try to meet friends as much as i can. A few have travelled back to their "home" cities so arent in Gothenburg and those who have stayed are all working. So it will definitely be a difficult process to try to find time that suits us all as some work mornings, some work evenings, some work weekends and others work weekdays.... and then theres me who can only give a confirmation of whether i can join or not 12 hours prior hahahha. It will definitely be hard for me to book in things this summer as it might happen that i have to cancel last minute.

I want to go for walks in the sun and not spend all my workout time in the gym. Though the past few months i havent gone to the gym so much due to injury, illness or just being unmotivated so now i am 150% motivated for the gym and not so much walking or other forms of exercise!

I dont have any goals or plans this summer... just to be happy and appreciate each day!

So tell me.... what are YOUR plans for the summer? :)

    2. Haha what? If you think I'm fat then you have some real body image problems you need to work on. Not sure what the point of your comment is but I hope you feel better now than you did before!

  2. Sounds like a good summer plan, Izzy! I'm doing some volunteer work where you get trained and then help teach young primary school children to read at underprivileged schools (I live in a third world country so always plenty of opportunities to help). I'm also doing a part time course in digital brand strategy (something fun to complement my business and economics degree). I'm also searching for a job so I can do some casual waitressing. Otherwise I've been reading, seeing friends, sleeping a lot and going for hikes. Xx

  3. I also just started my summer vacation :)
I went to a small concert last night and it was so much fun! I'm planning to head up to our family cabin for a week. I'll be able to just read, sleep eat, go for walks, do puzzles...it'll be so relaxing and I'm quite excited.
My sister and I are going on a trip at the end of the month to Prince Edward Island (in Canada!) I'm definitely looking forward to that.
I'll be working all of July and August at a philosophy camp for kids. It'll be my 6th summer there.
Enjoy your summer! Don't work too hard ;)

    3. Prince Edward Island!! I am so jealous! Being a huge Anne of Green Gables fan, I was lucky enough to spend a semster studying there towards my degree and have visited the Island three times in total. It is a truly magical place. Make sure you check out the Anne of Green Gables musical and you have to try Cows icecream - its to die for - my favourite flavour is birthday cake batter. If you want any more tips or ideas on what to do and where to go, just reply to this comment and I'll pass on my email address :)

  4. Hey Izzy! :) I am going to Barcelona for a five week placement at a kid's summer camp..it will be my first job ever, I am so nervous but I am really hoping that it will be a great experience and that it will help me realise I have so much to recover for.

Also Izzy - I wondered if you could give me some advice, or do a post on this, as maybe others might find it helpful. I am weight restored but I am still experiencing a type of extreme hunger at certain times of the day - not really being physically hungry, but just having cravings all the time and wanting to eat more, even if I've already had alot. I find this really scary, as technically I don't have any weight to gain anymore, or so I thought...but is this extreme hunger there for a reason? I'm not eating intuitively, I'm still following a meal plan, the same as I was when I was gaining - though I did make a few reductions, I admit, which I'm sort of trying to incorporate back in again. Thank you so much, i do apologise for the long comment! xxx

    1. Hi Izzy, I would find an answer to this helpful too as I am the same! I am almost weight restored but still have 2 or 3kgs to go, however I seem to be gaining a lot more quickly now than I did at the beginning of recovery. I've cut down on my meal plan because I was worried i was eating too much now I'm almost weight restored, but I'm still consistently gaining every week. Like Emily I am craving food all the time even though I do eat well at meal times and my dietitian has told me that my diet is very good and well balanced. I just seem to want to snack all the time and it is hard to resist! Did you experience the same thing? Is this common? Thanks for being an inspiration :)

  5. Well you just know its officially Summer time when Big Brother starts! Part of me is hoping it is rubbish this year otherwise I will be a slave to the tv every evening .....yet secretly I also hope its great :) As you might have guessed - I love Big Brother, trouble is - its addictive viewing! Do you have Big Brother? So the start of Summer here begins with 9+ weeks of fly on the wall tv - it used to be 24hr live screening but now they edit it to a programme every night with limited live feed late at night/early morning - so I guess its not so bad as before when the tv went on all day if I was home!
So what are my plans for the summer? To enjoy the sunshine as much as I can - its been a long time coming this year! To sit out in my now tidy garden with a good book and a glass of something cold and refreshing, just chill basically. Not planning on going away this year because of my coming operation but who knows, may manage a break later in the year. It would be nice to get away for a while - I rather fancy the Channel Islands or Ireland.
So rather boring I guess - but health matters come first this year.
I hope you have a lovely summer Izzy and enjoy your hard earned break from studying. Even if you are working if its something you want to do then it`ll be great!
Have fun and enjoy - the sun isn't around for long :)

  8. Hi I was wondering if you could do a post about salt? Like how bad is salt? Recently I've become a bit obsessed with worrying about my salt intake as a health concern. I don't eat much 'salty food' but there's so much in all foods that even though I don't add extra salt or seek out salty snacks I still probably have more than the 6g recommended. Like it just adds up say today I've had 1 gram of salt in bread, 1.5 grams in baked beans, 1.5 grams in vegetable stock and 1.2 grams in veggie sausages and then half a gram in my afternoon snack, and then at least another gram or more in yoghurt and milk... like how bad is it to have like 8g of salt a day? I don't see how I can reduce my salt intake anymore!

    1. Hey! I'm not Izzy but I used to worry about this a lot too for different reasons though (I developed an intense irrational fear of developing a kidney stone and had heard somewhere that too much salt can cause them - this was totally unvarified. I completely avoided anything salty and what happened was my bloody pressure continuously dropped and I kept passing out (not underweight). Salt is actually an essential electrolyte. I have had lengthy discussions with my dietician about this and she has said there's no need to avoid salt unless you've been told to by a doctor (e.g. Existing health problems made worse by high sodium, high blood pressure, kidney function, etc.). I actually have to add salt to my foods (by order of the doctor of course) because I don't get enough from the foods I eat and my preexisting low blood pressure problem. Sorry, this rambles a bit, basically what I'm trying to say is I wouldn't worry about it too much. If you are finding yourself worrying about it being too much, get your doctor to check your sodium levels and advise if you do need to be avoiding it.
      Good luck! :)

    2. Thanks flr this reply and the one below too. Yeah it's probably not a major worry, like it's probably only a problem for people who eat wayyyy too much salt. It's hard sometimes to know where to draw the line on what is healthy without being unhealthy!

    3. I was told by my doctor to add salt to my meals and in cooking too because of my low blood pressure.

  9. Have you tried buying the reduced salt/no added salt foods? You are quite right, salt is hidden in everything these days. I don`t add salt to my meals and are careful when adding it to cooking. I try to avoid the more heavily processed foods such as some breakfast cereals as these can be high in salt, as well as sugar. Then there are the obvious foods such as shop brought pizza and tinned meat products that are also quite high. So you can cut back/keep an eye on salt intake just by doing this.
Some salt though is essential to the body and I`ve no doubt Izzy can advise you about this.
But a post about salt intake, and maybe even sugar intake would be useful, I agree!
