Life without Anorexia

My motto is
'Dont let the sadness of your past & the fear of your future ruin the happiness of your present'

My life at the moment is completely different to how it once was. I spent 5 years sick with anorexia nervosia and depression as well as struggling with self harm and overexercising. I spent 2 years in different treatment centres.
And since 2012 i have been declared healthy from my eating disorder.

I have been blogging for 7 years, and my whole journey is written in my posts. I now represent healthy and happiness. I want to show anyone struggling that it is possible to recover, no matter how hard it may seem.

I now blog about recovery, my life, veganism and positivity!

If you have any questions leave them in the comment section as i am much quicker at answering there, otherwise you can always send an email: lifewithoutanorexia@hotmail.com

Get comfortable with being uncomfortable

There are many words to describe recovery - Tough, hard as hell, frustrating, anxiety evoking, annoying, irritating and even.... uncomfortable.

Because that is what recovery is, its uncomfortable. You get comfortable with your ED. Having control of your food which in turn feels like having control over your life. Leaving and fighting against your ED provokes anxiety, a fear of the unknown, of what is going to happen. You leave your comfort zone... humans LIKE comfort. Thats why we have comfoy beds, we have nice houses, we have comfortable clothes (most probably), comfortable cars and comfortable lives.... because thats what we like. There are those few adrenaline junkies, or those who like to step outside of their comfort zone. Face all their fears, do the things that they dont like and scare them. Though many people arent like that... its a human behaviour.
But in recovery, you have to get used to being uncomfortable.

You have to almost get used to the anxiety, not in a good way, but you have to be able to stand against it. Anxiety shouldnt be a constant feeling or state of being, but you should know that it doesnt kill you.
You need to face ALL your fears... fear foods, fear situations... face all the things that scare you. You can have an uncomfortable feeling in your body, this unknowing, anxiety... but its OK. Soon you WILL know. You will have control again, but you dont have to control your food to have control over your life.

Learn to deal with the anxiety/panic and uncomfortableness... embrace that feeling. Know that you are doing something right. When you are following your ED, doing what it says then you dont get anxiety... but when you go against your ED, when you eat when you dont want to or eat something you dont want... you get anxiety. And that is a sign that you have done something your ED doesnt want you to. Which is a GOOD thing.
So embrace those feelings and keep fighting, because soon the uncomfortableness, the anxiety, the guilt, the panic it will all go away as well!

  1. Hi Izzy! You write very wisely. It´s just so hard to really face the anxiety and uncomfortable feelings that follow the changes. I´m just already so scared of the anxiety, so I just go the way it stays away. Meaning that I barely keep my weight and follow my strict eating and exercise habits. Even if I know that this is not the way life should be lived :( I want to be healthy, but i`m just too scared to step outside my rules:(

  2. i know how you feel: i was in the same position only a short while ago... so many habits that if i messed up a tiny bit i would get tremendous anxiety!! what you really need to do is fight against the voice: you can do it, there is no other way. because if you decide to keep listening to your ED and then delay recovery until later, you will still have the hard work to do, and even harder the longer you wait. then it gets harder to recognize yourself and your ED as different. i believe in you even without knowing you :) and i thought it would be impossible. but it is possible!! and life is so much better!! :) have a motto/a few inspirational quotes/a drawing, etc... to look at during the difficult times. you can do it!! :)
